FAQs

Q: Does it ever get scary?
A: Yes. Want to see my shorts? There are times when the wind is howling, the waves are crashing and there's no end in sight. So we grab the Capt Morgan.

Q: How did you get ready for this trip?
A: Get ready? I don't get it. We just up and left. Isn't that what most people do?

Q: How do you stay in touch?
A: Our phones work. Some of the times. Mexico is not Verizon friendly. We purchased a local internet card for the computer. And it works. Most of the time. Marie needs her internet like most people need air to breathe!

Q: How do you fill your time?
A: When we're in La Paz, it seems we always need something. Cheese, Capt Morgan, peanuts, tortillas... anything is a good excuse to run into town and walk among the humans. But when we're out for days at a time, we just do what most people do and complain about getting old. And then we read. Marie spends at least one hour per day learning Spanish while The Captain is constantly searching for new places to visit in the Sea of Cortez. And then at night we watch movies...

Q: Are you always anchored?
A: Yes. Most of the time. If it gets really really rough we book some R&R at a marina and lay low until the weather calms down. So far we've stayed about 6 days at a marina. Living without any expenses becomes our key objective.

Q: How long will you do this for?
A: We really don't know. When we set out our goal was to go cruising for a minimum of 3 months. We left on Nov. 10. It will all depend on our finances and our sense of adventure.

Q: What do you do for power and electricity?
A: We have, on board, a small portable (I love that title - portable) generator. It takes a few gallons of fuel to fully charge the batteries and they last a good day depending on what we do. We try to save on energy as much as possible and use actual power only at night when we want to watch movies. The big drain sucker is the fridge! It's crazy how much power those things need. The gas stove and BBQ is what we use for all our cooking needs...

Q: What about potable water?
A: Thanks to a great friend, we purchased a nifty water maker. With the wonders of reverse osmosis we can remove all salt and any other particles from sea water magically transforming it into fully drinkable water! It's amazing really!!! What will they come up with next?

Q: What will they come up with next?
A: I don't know. I just said that.
